Puck preparation has one practical job: leave an evenly distributed, level bed of coffee that water can move through consistently. It does not need to become a sequence of tapping, spinning, polishing, and retamping. A short routine is easier to repeat, and repeatability helps you tell a grind problem from a preparation problem.

Start with a basket that fits the dose

Use the basket's stated dose range as a starting point. An 18-gram basket is not a promise that every coffee will fit at exactly 18 grams; roast density changes the space a given weight occupies. Look for adequate headspace using the machine and basket maker's guidance.

If the puck routinely presses against the shower screen before brewing, reduce the dose or choose an appropriate basket. Do not force the portafilter into place. Conversely, an unusually small dose in a large basket may be difficult to distribute evenly. Solve the fit before adding tools.

Choose a four-step preparation sequence

Begin with a clean, dry basket. Grind the measured dose into it, using a funnel if grounds otherwise spill over the rim. Spread the grounds so the center is not a mound and the edges are not empty. Tamp once with the tamper level, then brush loose grounds from the rim before locking in.

For many grinders, gentle distribution with a thin-needle tool helps break clumps. Work through the bed rather than only stirring the surface, then finish with shallow movements that leave the top roughly level. The tool should have suitable fine needles and be used carefully; improvised sharp objects are unnecessary.

If your grinder already delivers a fluffy, even bed, compare shots with and without that step. Keep it only if it reduces variation or improves the cup. A technique does not become mandatory because it appears in an elaborate video.

Tamp level, then leave the puck alone

Support the portafilter securely and keep your wrist in a comfortable position. Apply firm, even pressure until the coffee is compressed. Trying to hit an exact force number is less useful than avoiding a tilted tamp.

Do not knock the basket hard after tamping. That can separate the puck from the wall or disturb the bed you just prepared. Repeated polishing spins and a second harder tamp are not reliable fixes for an incorrect grind.

A self-leveling tamper may help someone who has trouble staying square to the basket. It is an ergonomic option, not proof that an ordinary tamper cannot make good espresso. Check diameter and basket compatibility before considering one.

Evaluate consistency over several drinks

Keep dose, target yield, and machine warmup the same for three shots on separate occasions. Record the preparation steps and observe whether shot time and flavor stay reasonably close. A single attractive stream is not enough evidence to justify five extra tools.

If results vary sharply, inspect grinder retention, basket dryness, and dose accuracy. If results repeat but taste sour or bitter, adjust grind or yield. Puck preparation should remove unevenness; it should not absorb every troubleshooting task.

Add accessories only for a defined reason

A puck screen adds another part to handle and clean, and it can reduce available headspace. A rotating distributor may flatten the top without correcting uneven density underneath. Neither is an automatic upgrade.

Keep the tools that solve a specific problem in your setup, store them where they do not clutter the scale, and remove the rest. The finished routine should be simple enough that you can perform it on an ordinary morning without remembering a complicated choreography.
